The merger of the University of Natal and the University of Durban-Westville is still scheduled for 1 January 2004 but will only be gazetted once the Minister of Education has received the report of the independent assessor appointed to investigate matters relating to governance and management at the University of Durban-Westville.

The Minister’s announcement also heralded the end of an era for technikons – following proposals by the Committee of Technikon Principals, they will now be called Universities of Technology.
