The song of Nelson Mandela, The freedom to be
From Nelson Mandela's inaugural speech[ 南非故事 Cooltang.com ] Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Written by Jon Gadsby RANDOM HOUSE THE SONG OF NELSON ANDELA[ 南非故事 Cooltang.com ] On 18 July 1918 a baby boy was born in the village of Mvezo, in the Transkei, a region of South Africa. The baby's father was a local chief of the Thembu house and named his son Rolihlahla. The baby was to grow up in his mother's village (or kraal) of Qunu and was to become widely known as Nelson Mandela. In later years, as a sign of respect, Nelson was also called Madiba. He was to fight for his people and become an inspiration to the world.[ 南非故事 Cooltang.com ] As a boy, Nelson Mandela played with all the other children in the village: swirnming in the clear streams; sliding down hills on flat stones; playing hide-and-seek; and stick-fighting in a game called thinti. None of the villagers had much money, but there was warm milk straight from the cow and nuts, honey and fruit to gather. Nelson helped look after his family's cows, horses, goats and sheep, and would wonder about his future. He loved to be alone in the wide, open spaces of the veld and enjoy his freedom. Freedom is a very important thing for a little boy who grows up thinking he is free ... and then finds out he is not. When he was older, Nelson learnt about the injustices of his country. He saw how his people were not free to live as they pleased simply because of the colour of their skin. He decided to fight the wrongs of his country and carried his message of freedom like a torch. His message spread, but it was a threat to those in power.[ 南非故事 Cooltang.com ] Before long Nelson Mandela and many of his friends were put in jail in an attempt to silence their protests. But even the hard, cruel work he was made to do in the prison's stone quarry and the years he spent locked up could not put out the light of freedom that burned inside him. The memories of his happy childhood kept Nelson's hope alive for a better life for his people. He tried to forgive those in power. On long, lonely nights in his prison cell, Nelson would dream of his childhood games. The one he remembered most fondly was khetha, in which each girl picked her favourite boy. He wanted everyone to have that sense of freedom he had had as a child.[ 南非故事 Cooltang.com ] Born of Thembu, chieftain, high, your playground is the broad Transkei.
