On the eve of South Africa's third democratic election, the Democratic Alliance and the Green Party of SA have reached a cooperation agreement.

In a joint statement on Tuesday, DA federal chairperson James Selfe and Greens leader Judy Sole said they had agreed in principle to work together in an effort to promote multi-party democracy and an environmentally sound economic policy for the country.

The two parties would meet shortly after Wednesday's election to discuss the long term nature of their cooperation.

"For the purposes of tomorrow's election, however, we unite in a call to voters to support the creation of a stronger opposition with a strong environmentally sound platform that can become the core of wise governance in South Africa," they said.

The Green Party called on its supporters to vote Green in the Western Cape provincial ballot and to vote DA on the national ballot and DA in all other provincial ballots.

The Green Party has only put forward candidates on the Western Cape provincial ballot.
